On This Date in Rams History: May 3

The Rams traded backup center Geoff Reece, a third-round pick out of Washington State in 1975, along with a 1977 second-round pick (#51 overall), to the Seattle Seahawks for the 31st pick in the ’77 draft.

Got it? Good!

In the 1977 Draft, the Rams took:
Bob Brudziński, LB, #23 overall, and then used the 31st pick on Nolan Cromwell.

Also in that draft, the Rams selected Billy Waddy, Wendell Tyler, and Vince Ferragamo…All five of these players started in Super Bowl 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Note: The third-round pick used to draft Reece in 1975 was acquired by the Rams from Green Bay in the John Hadl trade. That trade netted the Rams two #1s, two #2s, and a 3rd. In player capital, that translated to: Pat Thomas, Monte Jackson, and Mike Fanning. As well as Cromwell and Ron Jessie via trade/compensation.

Last Note 1977: The fourth round pick (#91 overall) the Rams used to take Vince Ferragamo…Came from trading linebacker Ken Borderlon to New Orleans in July of 1976.

Borderlon played with the Saints through 1982…Ferragamo, of course, took the Rams to the Super Bowl.

Happy Birthday to Cody Jones, who turns 75 today.

On This Day In Rams History: May 2

The Dutchman, Norm Van Brocklin, passed away in 1983 at 57.

The Hall of Fame quarterback shared quarterback duties with Ram legend Bob Waterfield early in his career.

In the 1951 NFL Championship game against the Cleveland Browns, Waterfield started. But it was Van Brocklin’s 73-yard touchdown pass to Tom Fears that proved to be the game-winner, 24-17.

In that same season (9/28/51), Van Brocklin set the single-game record for passing yardage with 554yds. A record that still stands.

After the 1957 season, Van Brocklin retired and returned a few months later (sound familiar?). But he didn’t want to play for Ram HC Sid Gillman and wanted more control of the offense.

In May of 1958, he was dealt to Philadelphia for two players and a number one pick.

(The pick, #2 overall in 1959, was Dick Bass, the centerpiece of the Rams rushing attack throughout the 1960s.)

Van Brocklin led the Eagles to the NFL title in 1960 and then retired. Later he was the head coach for both the expansion Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons.

On This Day In Rams History: May 1st.

1984—Rams trade picks #21 & #134 to the Kansas City Chiefs for cornerback Gary Green. He excelled for the Rams in 1984 and 1985.

Green, drafted 10th overall in 1977 out of Baylor, was a front line corner for KC. He appeared in three Pro Bowls for the Chiefs, and added a fourth while with the Rams.

He retired in 1986 after developing a bulging disc in his neck.

Irony is the Rams gave up the 21st pick in the 1984 draft for him, and the Rams gave up the 29th overall pick this year for Trent McDuffie…And McDuffie was the Chiefs 21st overall pick in 2022.

Both men are listed as being 5-11.

The Chiefs used the 21st pick in the 1984 draft to take John Alt out of Iowa. Alt was KC’s starting left tackle for 13 seasons and made two Pro Bowls.

Alt is the father of Los Angeles Chargers tackle Joe Alt.

***

1990—The Rams, in need of a backup quarterback, sent the 58th overall pick to the Detroit Lions for Chuck Long.

Long, a former first round pick, doesn’t do anything for the Rams. The Lions draft a WR, Reggie Barrett, who doesn’t do anything for them at #58.

Here’s where it gets painful.

At #59, the Arizona Cardinals draft future Hall of Fame cornerback Aeneas Williams. The Jets take multiple Pro Bowl linebacker Mo Lewis at #70, and the Dallas Cowboys take Erik Williams, who becomes their tackle for 10 seasons, wins three Super Bowls, and is named to four Pro Bowls.

The Rams in the first three rounds of 1990 got: Bern Brostek, Pat Terrell, and Latin Berry.

Kick it!

If you don’t know what “42-15-7” means…then you shouldn’t talk basketball…Just run along, back, to Camp Snoopy and wait for the WNBA season to start.

What is clear, if not for LeBron—I said it—this series would be 3-2 in favor of the Rockets, who are just faster and younger. If I’m J.J. Reddick, I put my team through the motions in Game Six, rest LeBron, and gear up for Game Seven at home.

I don’t have any answers for the Lakers in Houston tonight, but I do know the solution isn’t more minutes for Bronny.

The first Laker game I ever saw from start to finish was on April 21, 1973, Game Three of the Western Conference finals. The Lakers beat the Warriors in Oakland, 126-70.

That win was always my standard for a blowout, even more than the Memorial Day Massacre, until…the Knicks burned down Atlanta last night.

Sherman didn’t torch Atlanta as badly as the Knicks did the Hawks. At one point, New York led by 61, in a 140-89 victory.

Joel Embid has risen from the grave, and the 76ers have a legitimate shot to take Game Seven—third win—in Boston.

Embid just being functional with a healthy Paul George, a blossoming VJ Edgecombe, and a superstar in Tyrese Maxey…should make people rethink how far Philly could go…Especially if they dispatch the Celtics.

#36—May the San Francisco Giants rot and lie stinking in the earth…

If you want to check out the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Angels tonight in Anaheim, $21 will get you a seat in the View Section.

I’ve sat in those seats, and it’s like not even going to a game. Hence, I would take on other challenges at the Big A.
(Ask me sometime about Juan Beníquez, a 3-run homer, and extra innings versus the Brewers)

We know anything is possible with the Rams. And because the Rams have a strong culture, even a problematic player like OBJ can come in and be a good soldier… but Stefon Diggs feels like a bit much.

A report surfaced that Chase Claypool was working out for the Green Bay Packers. If anybody ever sabotaged their career, it was Claypool, but if he doesn’t sign with the Packers and his head is screwed on straight, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Rams taking a swing at him.

Now that the NFL Draft has passed…Be suspicious when someone bangs the drum about a particular player being the steal.

Say hello to Tre Hodges-Tomlinson.

Tomlinson, waived yesterday by the San Francisco 49ers, was a sixth-round pick out of TCU by the Rams in 2023. When he was taken, all the postscripts to the draft reported the Rams got a first-round talent at corner.

“If Hodges-Tomlinson was three inches taller and 20 pounds heavier with the same skill set he has now, I don’t think there’s any question that he’d be the top cornerback in this draft class, and perhaps the top non-quarterback.”—USA Today’s Doug Farrar

Note to Colin Cowherd: The Raiders weren’t Los Angeles’ team. Yes, they won a title. Yes, they had a niche they appealed to, but they were never embraced as a replacement for the Rams.

And anyone who was a Rams fan when they played in Los Angeles was still a Rams fan when they moved to Anaheim.

Kick it!

Oh, I’ve always been a Reed Shepphard fan.

Could the Lakers end up swallowing the whole jalapeño in their series with the Houston Rockets? It looks that way.

Think of all the good feelings and warm fuzzies of this late-season run going in the tank…or getting flushed—to use the phrase currently in vogue–if it happens.

Jabbari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson, these guys play with an absence of hiatus.

And Alperen Shengun’s like that football player who shows up to sixth period in April. He’s not even wearing basketball shoes, all elbows, banging into everything…and no one wants to guard him.

If DeShaun Watson tears it up this season for the Cleveland Browns, won’t it be a little awkward handing him a comeback player of the year award?

But if Watson can get anywhere near what he was, all the parts are there for the Browns to turn the AFC North on its head.

Detroit beat Orlando last night to force a Game 6 in their playoff series. Magic forward Paolo Banchero scored 45 points, but missed 7 free throws. The final score was Pistons 116, Magic 109.

The Rams draft pick no one is talking about, and the team’s most important rookie for 2026, is Keagan Trost.

During my “RamView” podcast last night, a 49er content creator said: “49er fans view George Seifert as their Barry Switzer.”

Seifert won two Super Bowls, Barry Switzer one, and for a franchise that hasn’t won a Super Bowl since January of 1995—I imagine the days of Seifert are looking pretty good right now.

Final Thought Reed Shepphard: If Western University’s Henry Steele ever made it to the NBA…he would’ve been Reed Shepphard. I keep waiting for the camera to locate and zoom in on Annette O’Toole.

Are the Rockets—at least in this series with the Lakers—better without Kevin Durant? Yes, they are.

#35—May the San Francisco Giants rot and lie stinking in the earth…

Welcome back, my friends, to the career that never ends…Calais Campbell is going back to the Baltimore Ravens for his 19th NFL season…Campbell went to the Super Bowl as a rookie in 2008 and has not been back since.

Campbell’s career earnings? $150-million.

Is DDS a real thing? I’m talking about Duke Derangement Syndrome.

So many people just hate Duke for being Duke—of course, that’s because Duke is Duke and they’ve been on TV more times than Leave It To Beaver.

I’m curious about the blood pressure of the DDSers after learning that Prime Video and Duke struck a deal to broadcast three of the Blue Devils’ high-profile non-conference games. The opponents will be UConn, Michigan, and Gonzaga.

Is Florida’s Olivier Rioux really transferring to UC Irvine? Where in the name of Bill Mulligan are the Anteaters coming up with the money?

Golden State HC Steve Kerr should be allowed to say anything he wants…But I also believe Warrior ownership has the right to tell him what he can say while wearing team gear, representing the franchise at a podium, or in any interview regarding basketball while employed with the team.

Beyond that, he can lead any parade, anywhere, while singing “The Internationale”…
