Kick it!

I’m taking it that Christian Pulisic being out with a calf injury on Friday is a bad thing for Team USA.

With the New York Knicks, Jalen Brunson demonstrating what can be accomplished with a smaller lead guard. Is Trae Young someone the Lakers should have interest in?

Or is he too ball-dominant to work with Luka Doncic?

Ironically, it was a 2018 draft night deal between the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks that landed Young with the Hawks and put Luka Doncic in uniform with the Mavericks.

We’ve all heard the story from the fiend, acquaintance, or some dude down at the park about how they would have made it in sports if not for the coach who did them over.

I was asked about my sports aspirations as a kid. I originally wanted to play quarterback at USC. I loved the way Pat Haden, Vince Evans, and Rob Hertel looked pitching the ball to the tailback on a “Student Body Right.”

I was pretty good at basketball, but I wasn’t big enough, talented enough, or skilled enough to play anything beyond the park, high school, and church league… And later, I’m positive, I became the inspiration for “Earth Day.”

The only hockey I played was Broom Ball…and baseball was played everywhere, but never organized.

The closest I came to Major League Baseball was in high school. I attended El Monte, and I was told I looked like Fred Lynn.

(I did have a baseball tryout at Mt. SAC, but a breaking ball on a 3-2 pitch ended that MLB path. I’ll save that self-deprecating story for another time when the word count is low.)

Finally…

Is it the responsibility of a professional athlete to take less to help the team? I would say no, but he may have a responsibility to himself.

For every performer, every entertainer, there is that desire to be remembered. We can all name the guy who wallowed with a bad organization and withered out of memory.

Like Roy Hobbs from The Natural, we want to walk down the street and hear them say: “There goes Roy Hobbs,  the best there’s ever been.”

But only nerds, fat guys, and/or the people paid to remember, remember who made the most money. So, while an organization in almost every case deserves nothing from the player beyond the fulfillment of the contract, the players themselves owe it to themselves to make the decisions that will affect their legacy.

By taking less money, like Brunson with the Knicks, it is a calculation that by winning a championship, he’s adding to his legacy account.

And that legacy account will convert into dollars when playing days are done through endorsements and seats on the dais for the networks and platforms.

Taking less allows them to stay or go to a place that is best for them.
Because I’ve seen it up close in other walks of life, it must be asked: When is enough, enough? And when does enough become too much?

No one wants to hear it, but generational wealth is seldom the path to generational happiness.

I’m for the player making as much as they can while they can.

(Use football before football uses you.)

But within that context, the athlete should decide what’s best for himself, his family, and his legacy: the right amount, what to take, what not to take, and what to defer.

And to do it…without any overriding input from agents, peers, or players’ union.

Question: What’s the etiquette for a hat trick in soccer? What do other countries and cultures throw? If Mbappe gets a hat trick for France, do we throw croissants? Norway’s Halland puts three into the net, do we throw herring onto the grass?

Should Messi’s fans have thrown entraña?

Who is like Messi? Who is able to make war with him?
Argentina won, and Messi delivered what everyone was hoping he would deliver. All is well in my world as we do the Messi’ Round… “Everybody do the Messi ’round!”

I freely admit I’m not a soccer guy, but do soccer types roll their eyes at American media personalities suddenly talking soccer as if they follow the sport between World Cups?

There’s a difference between a casual and a poser. A casual is someone like me who rolls in every four years because of the in-laws, gets some Christmas dinner table content, and piles on with takes about Communist Kickball.

One thing I am not is a poser about soccer, but I am pretty good at spotting a poser. And it feels—feels—like we have a lot of American media members doing a whole lot of posing.

I’ll accept correction, and I’ll also accept the naming of names. I have some names in mind already, but I want to hold off to see if they match yours.

The 2026 NFL Draft ended on April 25th, and by April 27th, all the undrafted free agents were likely signed. One of the Rams UDFA’s was offensive lineman Chad Lindberg out of North Carolina.

Lindberg was injured in rookie camp, and yesterday the Rams cut him with an injury settlement. The story that is never talked about enough in sports is that one day, you’re getting the call of your life, and five weeks later, you’re being asked if you finished your degree because your football career is over.

Hard Knocks used to show this kind of stuff, and it’s why you need to use football before football uses you.

Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver Rashee Rice has been released from jail after serving 30 days for violating probation. Is there an over-under on how long it will be until the next KC receiver is charged, arrested, or incarcerated?

I bring this up not to highlight that bad stuff happens, it does. I bring it up now to try to understand why the Chiefs continue to pay Patrick Mahomes so much money but never find him a frontline wide receiver.

Note to Caitlin Clark: Until you watch film, spend some time with Mr. Miyagi, or naturally come out of this slump, even if you feel it, don’t shoot it. Instead, dish it. Keep pouring the sugar on your teammates.

When she gets her stroke back, Clark is going to be devastating. Right now, for the WNBA, she’s great and breaking records, but it could be so much more.

Last Add Clark: She was four of seven from the field last night—inside the arc. Outside the arc, she was one for eight. When you’re only hitting one of eight from beyond the arc, for an extended period, your attempts should drop by three.

Shooting one for five can happen, but one of eight is the equivalent of smashing the dash because your car won’t start.

In 2025, the Chicago White Sox won 60 games. In 2024, they won 41 games. As of today, in 2026, they’ve won 38 games and are tied for first in the American League Central with the team formerly known as the Cleveland Indians.

#68—May the San Francisco Giants rot and lie stinking in the earth…

Last Add White Sox: Former Dodger Miguel Vargas has 16 home runs, 44 RBIs, and a .367 OBP. Which reminds me that the Dodgers have activated Tommy Edman from the 60-day injured list.

Regarding Brendan Sorsby… I’m glad the Rams drafted Ty Simpson.

The greatest universal, international spectacle in sports plays four matches on Monday, and all four end in a tie.

What Geraldo found in Al Capone’s vaults was more interesting.

I could go to any Amway symposium and sit there for days with a big smile on my face, and people would ask, “How can you stand it?”

I’d answer, “I watched the World Cup on Monday, I can take anything!”

And they’d say, ”I know exactly what you mean. Four games, four ties, ugh!”

I believe in the standard that you take your friend’s keys if they are about to drive drunk. But I also think friends should turn off a friend’s mic when they’re about to say something equivalent to the results of gastrointestinal distress.

Colin Cowherd needs a friend to turn off his mic when he tries to talk about Magic Johnson. An otherwise talented, well-prepared sports talk personality like Cowherd demonstrates every time he speaks about Magic that he never saw or studied his play.

Probably because he was having World Cup fantasies.

The Dallas Wings crushed the Las Vegas Aces last night 96-66. People talk about A’ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers, and Azzi Fudd, but Dallas center/forward Jessica Shepard (15 points, 15 boards, 9 assists) is The Joker of the WNBA. In a league full of bad basketball, she stands out like a porterhouse in a vegan restaurant.

The NBA season ended on Saturday, and in seven days, it will hold its draft. On June 30th, free agents can start negotiating and officially sign on July 6th.

And that’s it (outside of some summer scrimmages featuring G-Leaguers) until roughly the third week of October.

By contrast, starting in February, the NFL has the Super Bowl and ends the month with the Combine.
March: Free agency & Salary Cap.
April: Draft (3 Days)
May/June: Schedule release & OTAs
July: Camps open
August: Preseason
September: And it’s on with the show, this is it!

This isn’t a knock on the NBA, but just an illustration of the NFL’s gargantuan imprint on the calendar. So much so that while owning Thanksgiving, the NFL decided to take Christmas from the NBA—just because they blanking felt like it!

…And the beat goes on.

So the MLB puts its players in a position to make a political statement, and some players decide to make a different statement.
Talk about picking a fight when you didn’t have to pick a fight.

Pride Night’s a political statement, and three San Francisco Giants pitchers decided not to be aligned with it. They signed contracts to play baseball, not to be coerced into something they don’t believe in.

How this will play out is after enough pressure is applied, the players will go full Charles Barkley and apologize, the MLB will look bad, and the Texas Rangers will gain more fans.

…And the beat goes on.

What the angry athlete doesn’t get is that real fans want them to be happy. It’s good to see people (other people) happy, especially when they’ve mastered something.

I don’t like concerts. I go to a concert, and I bring a book to read. (Heck, I go to Disneyland and I bring a book to read.) It’s hard for me to sit and listen. To me, music is like a conveyance that keeps me in motion until a task or job is done.

When I am stuck at a concert, I focus on the performer. I think of the thousands of times they’ve performed and the ten thousand hours they’ve put in to prepare for those moments on the stage.

And what puts me over the top is seeing them happy. There’s a brief shot of Rob Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys’ video “Handle Me With Care” where he turns to George Harrison and emits a great smile.

A few years ago, in the Sunday Night Football opening, they incorporated Joan Jett, and there’s a shot of her smiling while playing the guitar.

It’s beautiful.

And seeing Jalen Brunson choke up in a post-game interview, recognizing what it meant to him, seeing him hug his family, he was so happy.

Seeing all the humbleness and gratitude of that Knicks team was the best.

(The Villanova Effect?)

Seeing Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup Final MVP Jordan Staal hand the Cup over to Frederik Andersen first—after all the goalie’s struggles—was the best thing to see and such a great demonstration of character in what can be described as a crooked and depraved generation.

For me, this is the reason I watch sports. I forget and lose focus for long stretches, but then I observe a title celebration, and I remember.

It’s a rich joy that someone who disdains sports will never know. And happiness is the great, unsung, narcotic of sports. Give me more! Mainline that stuff directly into my veins.

Can you be happy? Can you pretend to be happy? If you’re in a position of influence and can find a way to be happy—then you’re going to make a lot of other people happy. Core happy, joy happy, not angry happy.

I’m going to let you in on a secret… Most of the time, I’m only pretending to be angry. (Don’t let anyone know, I just do it for effect.)

Quick Baseball Question: The other day, who did you feel most sorry for? Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Mookie Betts?

Yamamoto is easy to root for. In that moment, when Betts kicked that ball, Yoshi exhibited a lot of grace out there. And grace is not something you can acquire. You either have grace or you don’t.

Coming back down to the valley…

Just once, it would be nice to see one of Caitlin Clark’s teammates/head coach take a “T” or return an elbow or shove on her behalf. (Sophie Cunningham did it once, a year ago.)

Last Add Spurs: Wemby is not helping himself, and if Popovich is giving him counsel, then he’s leading the kid down the wrong path. If he doesn’t want to respect the national anthem, that’s fine, stay in the locker room—I think that’s a good call…But why cost yourself all the goodwill that’s just waiting to be picked up? And, given the Fighting Frenchman’s youth and talent, the opportunity to join Elon in the Trillionaire Club.

Really Last Add Spurs: They deserved to lose Game Five for the way they handled the Knicks’ player introductions alone. A blown 29-point lead in the Garden is the equivalent of a market crash circa 1929. The whole franchise needed to bear down on Saturday—and the whole franchise didn’t.

The passing of former San Francisco 49ers edge Aldon Smith was sad, but not surprising.

What was surprising was hearing die-hard Fog City fans cut him loose after he blew repeated make-right opportunities. They got tired of Smith real fast.

Back to The NBA: Charles Barkley talks tough, and often hits the mark, but looks soft when he backs off a true statement. How can you state that the Spurs played the dumbest basketball ever…and then come back—after pressure was applied—and say he didn’t mean San Antonio, HC Mitch Johnson?

Of course, Mitch Johnson had fault in that Garden meltdown. And depending on your point of view, maybe more so than anyone else. There were choices and substitution patterns that didn’t make sense. And there were a couple of times he needed to get into Wemby’s grill—for the young man to regain some focus.

Last Add Finals: My takeaway before the final minutes of Game Five was that Dylan Harper was the breakout star for the Spurs…and it was confirmed when they were looking to the 20-year-old to rescue them in those final minutes.

My insignificant prayer to the Lord today is… “Please let Team USA lose to Paraguay…just so I can talk and write trash about soccer.”

But, I jest!

If I were working in a country that was in the process of making me a billionaire, I would stand respectfully for its national anthem.

Victor Wembanyama has chosen not to…and in the end, he’ll still wind up a billionaire. While it’s noticeable he remains in the locker room when the anthem is played, I think it is better than making a scene on the court. I give him props for that.

If that’s his choice, I’m fine with it. He’s still a great player, and he’s going to have a great career. He’s going to be the face of the league.

The only thing it is going to cost Wemby is the status of being beloved. LeBron’s been the face of the league, but I don’t think he’s ever been beloved. I don’t even think Kobe was universally beloved, although his tragic death moved his legacy in that direction.

I think Michael Jordan—in a pre-social media world—was the last face of the league to be beloved. Could someone make an argument for Shaq? I suppose, but I lean Jordan.

And if we need a face of the league, I’ll take the New York Knicks.

A report this morning said thousands of tickets were still available at SoFi tonight for Team USA’s World Cup opener versus Paraguay:

Prices are as follows:

FIFA’s official face value comes in four categories:
Top Three Tiers: $1,120-to-$2,735.
Lowest (Upper Level): $560.

Costs via resale on SeatGeek, Ticketmaster, and StubHub range from $690 to $900, and can go as high as $5,000 to $6,000.

Or you can choose the Dodgers-White Sox at Rate Field in Chicago—for 86 bucks.
Or you can hassle the traffic to the Big A to see the Rays & Angels. You only need 9 bones to get into that one.
Or watch a free “Seinfeld” rerun.
Or do what I’m going to do…take the wife to dinner.

I saw a Twitter/X proposal: Would you take 12 years of peak Rob Gronkowski or 12 years of peak Calvin Johnson? I like Megatron, but I’d go Gronk.
And I’d give them both up for 12 more years of peak Matthew Stafford.

“RamView broadcasts LIVE Today on YouTube”

Watched an average Indiana Fever team hold on in overtime to beat the Chicago Sky last night. Caitlin Clark, who is so good she makes a terribly run team average, scored 32, grabbed seven boards, and delivered 10 assists.

The fact that she keeps assaulting the record book in only her third season tells you what the level of play has been in the WNBA.

However, when all is said and done, her career is going to look like Pistol Pete’s, and Paige Bueckers is going to have the rings.

By the way, that was a Commissioner’s Cup game between Chicago and Indiana…Whatever…Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indy can hold 17,274…Attendance was announced at 15,30… that’s a great crowd, but the “Commissioner’s Cup” doesn’t move the needle.

Someone tries to sell me the Commissioner’s Cup (NBA or WNBA), and I’m back to reruns of Seinfeld.

The Dodgers have an eight-game lead in the National League West. It’s the end of May and the beginning of June, and it’s the perfect time for some of their key players to take a week or two off. Haven’t we seen this before?

The Harry Hystericals will weep and mourn, but a true Dodger hater like myself knows this is just the Bums getting things aligned for another October surge. This plot is more played than a Marvel movie.
